A rustic, lakefront log cabin, 35 minutes from Ottawa
This charming square-log settlers home (circa 1820) was entirely reconstructed in 1996, carefully retaining its rustic charm. It is situated on 2 wooded acres, overlooking a small, very quiet spring-fed lake about 35 minutes (43 km) north of Ottawa off hwy 307, near Saint-Pierre de Wakefield, in the municipality of Val des Monts.
With pine floors and high ceilings, and nicely furnished with antiques and leather sofas, it makes for a comfortable get-away any time of the year; a nice place just to curl up in front of the fire. There is a telephone, a small stereo-radio/cd player (the cd player skips occasionally), a piano, an eclectic library, and a very small b&w tv set suitable for watching the news and weather, and perhaps the final minutes of critical hockey games. NO cutting edge technology! The kitchen is in a good-sized post and beam addition. It is equipped with a Jenair grill, toaster-oven, coffee-maker, microwave, and all necessary utensils. The farm table seats 6 comfortably. We request that guests do not smoke inside the cabin.
The summer offers excellent swimming, diving, canoeing, and fly-fishing for rainbow trout, all right off a sunny dock only steps from the cabin. Abundant wildlife including beaver, raccoon, deer, turtle, porcupine, and bird-life including blue-heron and loon are found on and around the lake. We are sorry, but to protect local flora and fauna, dogs are not permitted. The lake is motor-free, and a canoe is provided. For gas boats, lac Saint-Pierre and a public launch are 5 minutes away
For the winter season, several ski-hills are located nearby: Edelweiss is about 15 minutes, Mount Cascade and Vorlage about 25 minutes each. One can cross country ski around the lake, or snowshoe in the surrounding hills. A groomed ski-trail, Nakertuk”, is about 12 minutes from the cabin, and the popular trails of Gatineau Park are about 25 minutes.
Well insulated, it is heated by a hi-efficiency Jotul wood-stove, with electric-baseboard heaters as back-up. Good quality firewood is supplied. 1 ½ stories, 1 ½ baths, it has 2 upstairs bedrooms (1 double-bed, 2 singles, plus a double futon bed in a small adjoining mezzanine area). Clean linens and towels for 4 are provided. The wood-stove keeps the sleeping area quite warm, but in winter, you may wish to bring a few extra warm blankets just in case. Arrangements for laundry can be made.
The roads are kept in good state (many of the people in the area are year-round residents who commute daily to Hull-Ottawa) but in winter, ice/snow tires are required for a hill leading to the lake, rather than all-season tires. There is a single carport off the lane
All necessities are provided for your comfort and convenience. You need bring only your clothing. Shopping for all provisions is within a 5-10 minute drive in either the village of Saint-Pierre de Wakefield or the village of Poltimore.
